Routing Tables #

A routing table is a network component used in a VPC.

It contains a set of rules that determine where network traffic from subnets or gateways is directed.

It is used to effectively route and forward network traffic within a VPC.

Default Routing Table #

It is automatically provided with a VPC and controls the routing for all subnets not explicitly associated with another routing table.

Custom Routing Table #

This is a routing table created by the user for their VPC. It defines the destination of traffic and how it should be delivered to that destination.

Destination, Target #

The destination is the range of target IP addresses (CIDR) to which traffic will be directed. It specifies the gateway, network interface, or connection to use when sending traffic.

CIDR: A method of representing network addresses by combining a network address and a subnet mask, enabling more flexible address allocation than the traditional class-based IP addressing system. While the class-based IP addressing system allocated addresses based on A, B, and C classes, CIDR allows IP addresses to be allocated in smaller block units.

Routing Table Association #

This is the association between a routing table and a subnet, an internet gateway, or a virtual private gateway.

Subnet Routing Table #

A routing table associated with a specific subnet, which routes traffic within that subnet.

Local Routing #

The default routing rule for communication within a VPC.

Propagation #

If you associate a virtual private gateway and enable route propagation, routes for VPN connections are automatically added to the subnet routing table.

Gateway Routing Table #

A routing table associated with an internet gateway or a virtual private gateway.

Edge Association #

A routing table used to route inbound VPC traffic to an appliance.
