HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol) It started as a protocol for transmitting HTML, but now it can transmit everything.

  • HTML, TEXT
  • IMAGE, Audio, Video, Files
  • JSON, XML (API)
  • Capable of transmitting almost all forms of data
  • HTTP is mostly used even when servers exchange data.
  • It's the era of HTTP now.

HTTP History #

  • HTTP/0.9 1991: Only supported GET method, no HTTP headers
  • HTTP/1.0 1996: Methods, headers added
  • HTTP/1.1 1997: Most widely used, the most important version for us RFC2068 (1997) > RFC2616 (1999) > RFC7230~7235 (2014)
  • HTTP/2 2015: Performance improvements
  • HTTP/3 In progress: UDP instead of TCP, performance improvements

Underlying Protocols #

  • TCP: HTTP/1.1, HTTP/2
  • UDP: HTTP/3
  • Currently, HTTP/1.1 is primarily used.
  • HTTP/2, HTTP/3 are also gradually increasing.

  • Operates in a client-server architecture.
  • Stateless protocol oriented, connectionless
  • Communication via HTTP messages
  • Simple and extensible.
